Lenovo brought two fresh mid-range handsets to this week’s Mobile World Congress — the fifth generation in the Moto G series. These are drawing plenty of attention in Barcelona, even though they aren’t flagship models, thanks to the series’ reputation, as well as the details which single out the Moto G5 Plus from the competition. The Moto G5 is less interesting, however.
Lenovo is expected to release Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus for sale around the world in the upcoming weeks … possibly starting by the end of this month.
Lenovo Moto G5 Plus Preview
The Moto G5 Plus has a metal body, while its finish is appropriate for its mid-range price tag. Its rounded and almost chunky shape provides a credible feeling when held in hand, even though it doesn’t feel the slightest bit like a premium phone.

The Moto G5 Plus offers a more than promising experience, according to its specifications. It has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 chipset, which has proved to be well suited for mid-range devices. Depending on the market where this model is being offered, it will be equipped with 2 GB, 3 GB, or 4 GB of RAM, as well as 32 GB or 64 GB of built-in storage. A microSD card slot can add up to 256 GB more.
Both the Moto G5 Plus and the smaller G5 come with an almost stock edition of Android OS 7.0 Nougat. which is becoming a market trend. The user interface modifications to Google’s operating system which used to be common are now more frequently seen as a burden rather than an added value. Rival Nokia also uses pure Android in its new phones, while Sony has included just minor UI modifications for its mid-range series.
That said, Lenovo uses Pixel launcher, the alternate version of the home screen that Google created for its own Pixel and Pixel XL phones.

One of the main advantages of the larger, 5.2-inch Moto G5 Plus is its fantastic rear-facing camera. The handset features a 12-megapixel Dual Pixel AF camera – the one we have seen on the much more expensive Samsung Galaxy S7. The image sensor captures a fairly large amount of light thanks to its f/1.7 aperture, which I tested in the intentionally darkened Lenovo exhibition area at the MWC. Images taken in these poor lighting conditions were exceptionally sharp with plenty of details visible; they had proper exposure and the saturation was above average.
Including such a superior camera in a mid-range phone should be eye-catching for purchasers.
On the other hand, theG5 Plus’s 5-megapixel selfie-camera with f/2.2 is average, and it yields results adequate to such humble specifications.

The metal body of this handset has room for a rather powerful 3000 mAh battery.
Moto G5 Plus Pricing
One of the aspects purchasers of the Moto G5 Plus will love is its price. The 2 GB RAM version with 32 GB of storage will cost $230, while the 3 GB RAM model with 32 GB of memory storage will set you back a bit more, €280 (not dollars!).
It seems clear from these prices that the more expensive and better-equipped phone is intended for the European market, while the smaller cheaper model is envisioned for the American market.

The smaller, 5-inch Moto G5 does not offer such an advanced rear camera as the G5 Plus, but its big advantage is that its metal body does make room for a swappable battery.

This handset’s screen resolution is the same as featured on the larger model. Thus, it includes an IPS matrix with Full HD resolution and a somewhat greater pixel density because of its smaller diagonal: 441 ppi, compared to 424 ppi of the Moto G5 Plus.
Moto G5 Performance
The Moto G5 has a somewhat slower processor than its sibling: Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 430, which has a reputation of a power gulper due to its eight Cortex-A53 cores running at 1.4 GHz.
Depending on the market where it’s being sold, the device will be available with 2 GB or 3 GB of RAM, and either 16 GB or 32 GB of integrated storage capacity.
Like its larger sibling, the G5 will run an unmodified edition of Android 7.0 Nougat.

When it comes to the rear-facing camera, the results are average, just like its specifications. The sensor features a 13-megapixel resolution with f/2.0 and it can record Full HD video clips, given that this is the maximum which the aforementioned Snapdragon processor can handle.
The front-facing camera is identical to the one in the Moto G5 Plus has: 5 megapixels and f/2.2.
Moto G5 Battery
Surprisingly, this phone includes a swappable battery. This has become a rare feature in the cell phone market, and represents a relatively significant diversifying factor for the mid-range compact phone class.
The battery, hidden under the rear cover, has 2800 mAh, and depending on the market, can also include a quick charge technology called TurboPower.
Moto G5 Pricing
The basic model with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of memory storage has been announced to cost approximately €200 in Europe or $200 in the USA.
